Course Description

Body-weight support treadmill training (BWSTT), provides a safe, intensive, task specific rehabilitation intervention for the recovery of locomotion.  However, the BWSTT evidence-base has been disappointing with respect to efficacy.  The integration of postural control and stepping is essential for the recovery of human locomotion, but this aspect of patient selection has received limited attention in the BWSTT evidence base.
The Bobath concept is a rehabilitation approach providing a conceptual framework for the assessment and treatment of complex movement problems. The integration of postural control, selective movement and manipulation of sensory information have been identified as key aspects of Bobath clinical practice.  This course will explore the inter-relationship of the recovery of postural control and stepping, and how the manipulation of sensory information, facilitation, a skilled aspect of Bobath clinical practice, can optimize patient selection for, and the application of BWST as a tool for locomotion recovery.

The course will consist of lectures, patient demonstrations followed by clinical reasoning sessions and practical sessions.

Course Objectives

The course participant will gain an understanding of:

  • The critical movement components and underpinning neurophysiology
    essential for BWST
  • The role of sensory information in postural control and locomotion
  • The role of facilitation in the recovery of postural control and stepping

The assessment of postural control and stepping with respect to
patient selection for BWST
