Course Description
This is an IBITA certified Advanced level Bobath course offered to physiotherapists and occupational therapists in possession of an IBITA recognized Basic Course certificate. In addition to theory, clinical reasoning and practical sessions the Advanced course offers supervised/mentored treatment sessions with patients.
This course will explore the topic of task practice, an integral aspect of neurological rehabilitation, but undertaken differently within the Bobath concept.
The theoretical component of this course will highlight how task practice relates to motor control theory and the intersection between posture and movement, task specific training with respect to motor learning and the implications of learned bad-use, and the role of task specific strength training in neurological-related movement recovery.
The practical component of this course will explore task analysis, task practice and task specific strength training from the perspective of determining the postural and selective movement elements relevant to the task, how facilitation provides an opportunity to practice a task whilst minimizing learned bad-use and optimizing movement recovery through repetition with variability.
Through patient demonstrations, patient treatment sessions and practical sessions the course participant will gain an opportunity to translate theoretical knowledge into clinical applications to address functional recovery in persons with neurological conditions. The model of Bobath clinical practice (MBCP) will be utilized to explore clinical reasoning at an Advanced level.
Course Objectives:
The course participant will gain an understanding of:
- The relationship between task practice and motor control theory
- Task analysis from the perspective of postural and selective movement elements
- The implications of learned bad-use with respect to motor learning
- The application of task specific strength-training within a Bobath paradigm
- The development of clinical reasoning and facilitation skills at an Advanced level
- The use of the model of Bobath clinical practice (MBCP) to explicate the clinical presentation and treatment plan of an individual with a neurological-related movement problem
